  • Can I make a Pin Loom?
Of course. It is easy and there are multiple ways of doing so. You can simply make a pin loom from a cardboard or something more definitive by buying nails and a wooden frame. In this video I show you how you can make your own pin loom with spare materials you can find at home: board pins and a piece of wooden surface.
  • Are there any resources to learn Pin Loom Weaving?
If you google "pin loom weaving" you will find lots of information regarding this technique, also video tutorials. In the Ullvuna Blog you can find free projects, inspiration and tips that also may help. Also in my Youtube channel. Meg Stump, a pin loom book author also describes her experience in her blog. Sue Burton, a pin loom amateur also describes her experience in her blog. The Yarn Label Gist is focused on weaving and they have amazing yarns developed specially for weaving techniques. There are also 3 pin loom weaving Facebook groups you can join in which pin loom weavers enthusiasts share their experience and finished projects: - The Ullvuna Community - Pin Loom Weaving Support Group - Tri-Loom and Continuous Strand Weavers
  • What yarn is recommended for Pin Loom Weaving?
It depends on the Pin Loom Weaving method you try: TRIOS WEAVING Recommended Yarn: N° 4 (Worstead/DK) in cotton / wool / acrylic / mix or blend. TAPESTRY WEAVING Recommended Yarn: N° 3 cotton is the best option for the warp, any kind and thickness for the weft: cotton / wool / acrylic / mix or blend. BIAS WEAVING Recommended Yarn: N° 5-6 (Bulky and Super Bulky): Cotton / Wool / Acrylic / Mix. Non elastic yarns are recommended. Also multiple strands of thinner yarns can be used. Is this your 1st time doing Pin Loom Weaving? Read the following advices: I DO NOT recommend to use: - Non elastic yarn, because the resulting piece may shrink. - Silk-finish yarn, because the strands tend to slide so it is easy to pull them with no intention. - Boucle or non uniform yarn, because they are confusing and tend to tangle. - Too dark colors, because it is difficult to distinguish the weave. - Rustic or artisan yarn, because they can cut easily. In the opposite, I DO recommend to use: - Variegated yarn, because it is easy to distinguish the weave. - Industrial Yarns, because they won´t cut easily. - Contrasting colors, because you need to distinguish the weave while weaving.
  • Can I use leftover yarn on for Pin Loom Weaving?
Of course! If you don´t have the yarn tag where the thickness is described, you must try out your yarns in your pin loom to see if they work as you expect. As a general rule, "the strands of yarn should be wider/thicker than the spaces in between while you are weaving". In any case, as soon as you remove the piece off the loom, you will identify if it has worked when it is firm and dense as the picture shows. If you want to understand about the yarn thicknesses, I recommend visiting the Yarn Standards detailed by the Craft Yarn Council. Therefore you will be able to buy the type of yarn you request regarding the pin loom you have and the weaving technique you will be doing.
  • Are there any yarn label examples?
In general, Trios Weaving uses thin yarn and Bias Weaving uses thick yarn. However, you can use multiple strands of thin yarn as a thick yarn, so it is easy to use leftovers from previous projects in these 2 Pin Loom Weaving methods. TRIOS WEAVING - Yarn: N° 4 (Worstead/DK) Cotton / Wool / Acrylic / Mix. I have tried Cascade Yarns and Malabrigo Yarn for my books. I have also tried Gist and Lion Brand Yarn. BIAS WEAVING - Yarn: N° 5-6 (Bulky and Super Bulky): Cotton / Wool / Acrylic / Mix. Non elastic yarns are recommended. I have tried Malabrigo Yarn (Bulky and Super Bulky) and Lion Brand Yarn (Bulky and Super Bulky). Multiple strands of thinner yarns can be used altogether forming a thick cord. You can also crochet or knit your own yarn. Read this Blog Post for more information regarding how to create thick yarn from thin yarn.
  • What happen is my yarn is too thin?
When you require a thicker yarn than the one you have, you can do the following. 1. Use multiple strands: Two or more, try them out to see how many you require. 2. Crochet or braid your own yarn: Using one or multiple strands, try them out to see how many you require. In this blog post I detail these 2 options.
